Lakshmi, also spelled Laxmi and Laksmi, is the Hindu goddess of abundance and true wealth. In this painting, she stands on a golden lotus on the cosmic ocean, swirling with potential creativity. Lakshmi's two lower hands show mudras of "have no fear" in her right hand and giving blessings with her left. Her two upper hands hold lotuses as a reminder that true wealth is spiritual and has an ascending quality.

This beautiful Lakshmi was originally painted on commission for a dear friend who is also an artist. Inspired by my friend's work and my own love of art history, this Lakshmi's is reminiscent of Botticelli's Birth of Venus. I am amazed at the parallels of sacred art from different cultures: two goddesses who arise from the vastness of the ocean. It may not be a coincidence.
